The Russian animated movie THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE has set one more record in China. Only on Sunday the film has earned another 1 million yuans; the total earnings amount to over $11 million. This is the best result for a Russian movie in the whole Chinese distribution history.
The animated movie THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE by the studio Wizart Animation entered the Chinese distribution on April 5 during the Ching Ming Festival and became a real sensation. The first weekend results show that the third Snow Queen movie hit the top three in China, On the first day in distribution the animated movie got the record sum for the Russian animation, which amounted to 17.34 million yuans and surpassed the record by He’s A Dragon.
The debut box office earnings were 25.88 million yuans on the premiere weekend and 43.28 million yuans in the first four days. Accordingly, on the first holiday weekend in China, the third instalment of The Snow Queen was overcome only by Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and the Indian movie Hindi Medium.
Usually Russian movies exhaust their potential pretty quickly and lose 95-99% of their screenings in the second week already. Here we should explain that mostly the first week results are affected by advertisement. The second week of the movie release is both advertising and the so-called grapevine. The third week is only the grapevine and the “voting” of the viewers in favor of the movie.
However, THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE manages to be successful at the box office sales for the 47th day already. Only in one single Sunday (May 20, 2018), the animated movie distribution earnings have gathered one more million yuans. Including these sums, the total box office of the film THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE amounts to 72.09 million yuans, which exceeds $11 million. Experts on the movie and animation market are already calling this result impressive.
Thus, the war drama movie Stalingrad that was released in China in October 2013 and used to seem impassable is now behind the animated movie.
Speaking about the Snow Queen franchise, it can be easily said than the Russian cinema can catch the Chinese audience’s interest and be successful. The company Wizart can be confidently called the flagman in the field that has become the basis for promoting Russian feature and animated movies in China.
«The animated movie THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE hasn’t only had a good start in China, but also keeps progressing during the whole release, showing growth on the following weekends. This shows that the grapevine principle has worked and the Chinese audience can relate to the parents and family theme,» says Vladimir Nikolaev, Executive Producer for Wizart.
“China is becoming one of the main foreign territories for the Russian movie distribution. This is a very profitable movie theatrical market not only for us but for the whole world. Considering that this year the Cinema Fund aims to increase the abroad numbers of viewers of Russian movies, the cultural expansion is going to continue for this territory. The successful release of the Snow Queen movie that has been staying in the top movie distribution list for several week proves that our national animation in particular and the Russian cinema in general are very attractive for the Chinese audience, which makes us really happy,” adds Anton Malyshev, the Executive Director of the Cinema Fund in Russia.
We should add that the distribution company for the movie is Turbo Films. It has been an unprecedented decision to prolong the theatrical distribution of the movie from April 5 till June 1 (here we should remind that an average theatrical release in China generally lasts for about a month, and to prolong the distribution the permission of the Chinese government is needed, which isn’t given very often).
Wizart, in collaboration with Turbo Films, held a large marketing campaign in China. The Voronezh studio Wizart Animation developed some sets of gif-images for Wechat (one of the biggest messengers in China). Also in expectation of the release, in the Wechat feed there were appearing posters with a count back to the theatrical release of the movie – and everyone willing to see the movie could repost the poster in their messenger profile. Wizart Animation was also helping to localize the posters and launch the augmented reality games.
Right now the distributor Turbo Films is discussing the production of licensed merchandising for the Snow Queen with a number of big Chinese companies. We can hope that after THE SNOW QUEEN 3: FIRE AND ICE leaves the movie theaters, it will move to the store shelves, as its images will be used in popular children’s goods.

Currently, in the very core of the studio Wizart Animation in Voronezh, the production of the fourth instalment called THE SNOW QUEEN: MIRRORLANDS is about to be finished – again under the direction of Aleksey Tsitsilin and Robert Lence. In the new adventure Gerda’s helpers will be trolls, pirates and even the Snow Queen herself.
The fourth movie in the franchise is being developed in cooperation with the film company Central Partnership (part of Gazprom Media), which acts as a co-investor of the project. It’s not the first experience of a partnership like that for Central Partnership. The company also invested in the movies Flight Crew and Viking in 2016, and in Going Vertical in 2017.
